the story,

Behind this piece

The dhoti and angavastram set belongs to a tradition that predates the loom itself in spirit, rooted in the unstitched draped garments of South and Central India. The golden woven border, rendered here in art silk, echoes the zari borders of ceremonial veshti traditions from Tamil Nadu and the silk-weaving belts of Andhra Pradesh, where border work has long signalled occasion and standing. Cream was never an absence of colour in this vocabulary; it was the ground upon which gold could speak. This set carries that quiet, formal logic into contemporary ritual dressing.

to wear it,

How to style

For a temple visit or a classical music evening, pair this set with a cream or ivory raw-silk kurta and brown Kolhapuri chappals. At a south Indian wedding, wear it alongside a full-sleeved silk kurta in deep ruby or forest green, and add a single gold chain to let the border remain the focal point. For a naming ceremony or seemantham, a plain white cotton kurta with a silk angavastram draped over the shoulder achieves a look that is devotional without effort. In all three settings, minimalism is the most fluent language.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk, a woven rayon-based fibre, requires gentle handling to preserve its lustre and the integrity of its woven border. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse thoroughly and spread flat on a clean cotton surface to dry in shade, away from direct sunlight which yellows the cream base over time. Iron on a low to medium setting with a pressing cloth placed between the iron and the fabric. Store loosely folded in a muslin bag rather than a sealed plastic cover to allow the fibre to breathe.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
