Behind this piece
Block printing on cotton is one of the oldest textile traditions of the Indian subcontinent, with its deepest roots in Rajasthan, particularly in the towns of Bagru and Sanganer near Jaipur. Artisans carve repeating motifs onto seasoned teak or sheesham wood blocks, each stamp placed by hand and eye alone. The booti, a small scattered floral or geometric repeat, has adorned everyday and ceremonial cloth for centuries. On this cranberry-red kurta pajama, the booti pattern speaks to that democratic tradition: refined enough for an occasion, honest enough for daily life.
How to style
Wear the set as intended for a relaxed Sunday lunch or a low-key festive gathering. Add a pair of tan or cognac leather juttis to warm the cranberry against the skin. For an elevated evening, layer a cream or ivory Nehru-collar Bundi jacket over the kurta and swap to pointed mojaris in metallic thread. In cooler months, a handwoven Maheshwari cotton stole in off-white or dusty gold drapes easily over one shoulder. Keep jewellery minimal: a single silver cuff or oxidised silver finger ring reads with quiet confidence against the printed cotton.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton breathes and softens beautifully with time but rewards careful handling. Wash in cold water by hand, or on a gentle machine cycle using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Wash separately for the first two or three washes, as block-printed fabric may release a small amount of excess dye. Do not soak for extended periods. Dry in shade, laid flat or on a hanger, away from direct sunlight to preserve the depth of the cranberry. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp. Store folded loosely in a cotton muslin bag, away from moisture and direct light.
