the story,

Behind this piece

Kalamkari, whose name translates literally as "pen work," has its roots in the temple towns of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where artists once narrated mythological stories in natural dye and lampblack on cloth. The Srikalahasti style favours freehand drawing; the Machilipatnam tradition relies on carved blocks. This saree draws on that living vocabulary, placing hand-painted or block-printed Kalamkari motifs along the border as a studied frame for the cotton body. The zari thread woven into that border is a later, courtly refinement, lending a quiet luminosity to what is, at its heart, a narrative textile.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree to a winter Sunday brunch with a slim ivory cotton blouse and kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. For a festive afternoon gathering, pair it with a sleeveless brocade blouse in deep gold and finish with oxidised silver jhumkas. The Mars Red variant carries a boldness that suits a formal cultural evening: pair it then with a silk blouse in burgundy, a Bidriware choker, and block-heeled mojaris. In all three instances, keep the pallu draped simply to let the Kalamkari border remain the single, deliberate focal point.

to last,

Fabric & care

Cotton Kalamkari printed with natural or reactive dyes rewards gentle handling. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric. Wash the saree separately for the first two or three washes, as surface colour may bleed lightly. Dry flat in shade to prevent the weave from distorting and to protect the zari thread from tarnishing in direct sunlight. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, away from synthetic bags that trap moisture. Ironed on a medium setting while slightly damp, cotton will recover its crisp, clean drape readily.
