about the piece,

Description

Woven in the colour of crushed wild berries, this cotton ikat saree carries the unhurried rhythm of Sambhalpur within every thread. The ikat tradition of western Odisha is among the most exacting in the subcontinent, demanding that weavers resist-dye the yarn in precise sequence before a single shuttle is thrown, so that the pattern emerges almost as if recalled from memory rather than constructed. Here, that discipline yields a saree in deep amaranth, a shade that feels both ancient and quietly arresting. The woven border holds its own geometry, a measured counterpoint to the body of the cloth, and the cotton itself breathes with the easy generosity that only hand-loomed fabric offers. It is a saree suited to the considered wardrobe, worn as effortlessly to a morning puja as to an afternoon gathering where textiles are noticed and appreciated. Pair it with an unbleached or ivory cotton blouse to let the amaranth speak without competition. Minimal gold jewellery, perhaps a single pair of jhumkas, will honour the integrity of the weave rather than overwhelm it.

the story,

Behind this piece

Sambhalpur, nestled in the heart of Odisha's Mahanadi basin, has long been the beating centre of Odisha's ikat tradition. Here, the Bhulia weaver community practises *bandha* work: a resist-dyeing technique where yarn is bound, dyed, and woven so that pattern and cloth are born together, inseparable. The woven border on this saree is not appliquéd or printed; it is constructed thread by thread on the loom. Amaranth, deep teal, karanda red, and oxblood red are colour choices rooted in the pigment vocabulary of this region, echoing the bold, earthy palette that Sambhalpuri cotton has always worn with confidence.

to wear it,

How to style

For a refined weekday office look, drape this in the Nivi style and pair it with a slim, ivory cotton blouse; a single strand of oxidised silver or dokra beads keeps the mood grounded. At a festive daytime gathering, choose the oxblood or karanda red colourway and anchor it with antique gold temple earrings and block-printed juttis. For a relaxed literary evening or gallery opening, the deep teal renders beautifully against a sleeveless raw-silk blouse in ivory or pale gold, finished with kolhapuri sandals and a minimal brass cuff on the wrist.

to last,

Fabric & care

Cotton ikat responds best to a gentle cold-water handwash with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Soak for no more than five minutes, then rinse without wringing; press out water gently between two clean towels. Dry flat in shade, never under direct sun, which fades the resist-dyed colours over time. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp to preserve the crisp texture of the weave. Store folded in soft muslin, away from synthetic fabrics and moisture. Properly cared for, Sambhalpuri cotton only deepens in character with each wash and each wearing.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
