Behind this piece
The kaftan is one of the oldest garments in recorded human dress, travelling from the courts of Mesopotamia through Mughal India, where it softened into the flowing angrakha silhouette. This midi length revives that unhurried ease. The colourblock panels speak to a distinctly Indian sensibility: the instinct to place bold, unbroken fields of colour beside one another, as seen in the patola weaves of Patan and the geometric resist prints of Kutch. Rayon, derived from plant cellulose, carries that same lightness, draping close to the body without weight, breathing honestly in Indian heat.
How to style
Wear it barefoot at a coastal dinner with oxidised silver hoops and a single stack of glass bangles at the wrist. For a gallery opening or literary evening, layer a structured linen blazer over the kaftan and add leather kolhapuris in tan. On quieter days, tie the silhouette loosely with a woven cotton belt, slip on flat juttis in complementary earth tones, and carry a block-printed potli. Each reading of this garment works best when accessories are few, considered, and carry some trace of craft in their making.
Fabric & care
Rayon is a semi-synthetic fibre with a delicate weave structure; it loses strength when wet and is prone to distortion if handled roughly during washing. Hand wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Do not wring or twist. Support the full weight of the wet garment when lifting it from the basin. Dry flat in shade, never on a direct line under sun, which weakens the fibre and fades the print. Store folded on a smooth shelf rather than hung, to prevent the fabric from stretching at the shoulders over time.
