Behind this piece
The jooti is among the oldest forms of footwear to have survived continuous wear in the Indian subcontinent, its roots travelling through the royal courts of Rajasthan and Punjab. Crafted in pure leather, this coffee-brown pair carries the tradition of hand-cut floral jali work, a technique requiring the artisan to pierce each motif individually with a fine awl or blade. The result is something between shoe and latticework. Made to order, each pair is shaped to the wearer's foot, honouring a practice of bespoke shoemaking that predates the very concept of standardised sizing.
How to style
Pair these with a cotton mulmul kurta in ivory or dusty rose and slim churidar trousers for a Sunday lunch or a curated art-gallery afternoon. For a wedding as a guest, let them anchor a champagne tissue or raw-silk sharara, balanced with polki or oxidised silver earrings. The coffee-brown leather reads equally well against a printed dabu-work kaftan worn with tapered palazzos, making them a considered choice for women who dress with intention. The cut-work detailing means they need no further ornament at the foot.
Fabric & care
Pure leather breathes but it also absorbs, so keep these away from prolonged moisture and direct sunlight, both of which cause the grain to crack or fade unevenly. Wipe clean after each wear with a soft dry cloth. Condition every few weeks using a colourless leather balm, applied sparingly in circular strokes. Store inside a cloth bag, never plastic, and stuff the toe lightly with acid-free tissue to hold the shape. With consistent care, good leather jooti last years rather than seasons, softening into the precise contours of the wearer's foot over time.
