Behind this piece
Pashmina originates in the high-altitude valleys of Kashmir, where the Changra goat yields its undercoat at altitudes above 14,000 feet. The fibre has been spun and woven here for centuries, traded along ancient routes from Srinagar to the courts of the Mughals. Kalamkari, a hand-drawn embroidery tradition with roots in both Andhra Pradesh and Persian textile arts, arrives here as a counterpoint: fluid floral forms inked in cobalt, worked onto wool of extraordinary fineness. The result is a dialogue between two distinct craft lineages, held together on a single length of cloth.
How to style
Drape this stole over an ivory or chalk-white Lucknawi kurta for festive lunches; the cobalt does the work of all jewellery. For winter weddings, layer it across the shoulders of a charcoal Benarasi silk saree, secured at the wrist with a single antique silver bangle. In cooler diaspora winters, wrap it as a scarf over a camel coat with tan kolhapuri-inspired leather boots, letting the Kalamkari florals read as the singular point of colour. All three combinations rely on restraint elsewhere so the embroidery can speak without competition.
Fabric & care
Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, ph-neutral shampoo or specialist wool wash; never hot water, never machine agitation. Press out water gently without wringing and lay flat on a clean towel to dry away from direct sunlight, which fades natural dyes. Do not hang while damp, as the weight of wet Pashmina distorts the weave. Store folded, not rolled, wrapped in a breathable muslin cloth with a cedar block to deter moths. With this care, pure Pashmina does not deteriorate; it softens incrementally and grows more beautiful over decades of use.
