Behind this piece
Woven in Varanasi, the city whose looms have hummed without interruption since the Mughal period, this saree carries the particular grammar of Banarasi brocade: silk threads interlocked with such precision that the fabric holds light differently at every hour. The ceramic blue ground belongs to a palette that Banaras weavers have long favoured, where cool mineral tones anchor the eye before fuchsia announces itself at the border and pallu. Weaver Ansar Ali works within the Ansari community's centuries-old tradition of kinkhwab and katan weaving, where the loom itself is considered an act of devotion.
How to style
For a winter wedding, pair this saree with a raw silk blouse in deep magenta to honour the fuchsia border, and finish with antique gold temple jewellery from Nagercoil or Thrissur. For a formal festive evening, a structured tissue blouse in ivory lets the brocade speak alone. For a daytime cultural event or literary gathering, drape it in a Gujarati style, add pearl drops and leather juttis in caramel. The ceramic blue makes it equally compelling at afternoon and candlelit occasions, needing very little added to reach completeness.
Fabric & care
Pure silk brocade requires dry cleaning exclusively; home washing will distort the weft float and weaken the zari-adjacent fibres. Between wearings, fold the saree along established creases with the pallu on the outside, and place a sheet of acid-free tissue between each fold to prevent colour transfer. Store inside a cotton muslin cloth, never polythene, which traps moisture and accelerates thread degradation. Keep the bundle flat, away from direct light. Well-maintained Banarasi silk held this way retains structural integrity for decades and deepens subtly in lustre with careful age.
