about the piece,

Description

Darkness, when rendered in silk, has its own luminosity. This caviar-black border is worked in fine silk, its ground deepened by cut-work openings that let light pass through in delicate negative spaces. Sequins are sewn across the surface with an attentiveness that speaks to embellishment traditions long practised in the ateliers of Lucknow and Surat, where the relationship between thread and embellishment is treated as a matter of proportion and restraint. The floral motifs, neither overwrought nor sparse, carry the character of craft that has moved quietly between the embroiderer's frame and the couturier's table for generations. At this width and scale, the border lends itself equally to ceremonial wear and to considered everyday dressing. The silk carries its colour with depth, resisting the flatness that lesser fabrics impose on black. Stitch this border along the hem of a chanderi dupatta or the edge of a sheer georgette kurta to anchor lightness with intention. It works as beautifully on a gathered skirt as it does framing the neckline of a blouse cut for a formal occasion.

the story,

Behind this piece

Cut-work on silk is a discipline that demands absolute stillness of hand. This border fabric draws from a lineage of embellished textile traditions practised across the ateliers of Lucknow and the zardozi workshops of old Delhi, where negative space is treated as deliberately as the thread itself. The sequin-work here follows a floral grammar common to Mughal-era court textiles, where blooms were never merely decorative but carried symbolic weight. Against the depth of caviar black, each cut aperture and mirrored sequin creates a conversation between absence and light that is quietly extraordinary.

to wear it,

How to style

Use this border fabric as the hem and sleeve trim on an ivory or champagne silk kurta for a winter wedding reception. The contrast of caviar black against pale silk will read as deliberately considered rather than incidental. Pair with Hyderabadi pearl drops and block-heeled mojris in nude leather. Alternatively, commission it as the border of an unstitched saree to be draped for a festive evening; finish the look with oxidised silver cuffs and flat Kolhapuri sandals. Reserve it for occasions where restraint speaks louder than excess.

to last,

Fabric & care

Silk cut-work embellished with sequins requires handling with genuine patience. Dry-clean only; immersion in water risks distorting the cut apertures and loosening sequin threads. Never wring or fold sharply along the embroidered border. When storing, roll the fabric over a muslin-wrapped tube rather than folding, to prevent crease lines forming across the cut-work. Keep in a breathable cotton muslin bag away from direct light, which fades silk unevenly over time. Avoid contact with perfume or deodorant. With conscientious care, this fabric will remain structurally and visually intact for many years of considered use.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
