the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the valley's workshops, known locally as karkhanas. Unlike the counted-thread precision of sozni, aari work moves freely across the surface, coaxing each petal and paisley into being with a continuous chain stitch that catches light like brushwork on silk or wool. The mimosa-yellow ground here is fine pure wool, warm in hand and luminous in tone, carrying flowers and boteh motifs that echo the Mughal garden in every curving tendril. This is a kaftan made entirely to your measure.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this kaftan over tapered ivory silk trousers for an unhurried festive afternoon at a mehendi or intimate baithak. A long oxidised silver necklace with turquoise inlay, referencing the blue of the Kashmir sky, will hold its own against the yellow ground without competing with the embroidery. For a cooler season gathering, layer a fine ivory pashmina stole across one shoulder. Flat Kolhapuri chappals in tan or ivory keep the silhouette relaxed and grounded; heeled mojris in antique gold lift it toward evening without disturbing the kaftan's easy, unhurried grace.

to last,

Fabric & care

Fine pure wool asks for patience. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, or have it dry-cleaned by a specialist familiar with embroidered textiles. Never wring; press the water out gently and reshape the garment flat on a clean towel to dry in shade. Steam, not a hot iron, removes any creasing. Store folded in breathable cotton muslin, never compressed in plastic, and keep a cedar block nearby to deter moths. Treated with this care, the wool will soften beautifully with each season and the aari embroidery will remain as vivid as the day it was made.
