about the piece,

Description

There is a quietness to this border that speaks before words do. Rendered on fine net in the cool, coastal registers of capri blue, this fabric border carries a digital print that unfolds across its length with the unhurried confidence of a Banarasi atelier at work. At its heart sits an applique figure: a lady veiled in ghoonghat, her silhouette drawn from the iconography of northern Indian bridal and festive traditions that have long found their home in the looms and craft studios of Varanasi. The applique is worked with care, layering texture against the sheerness of the net so that the figure appears almost to float within the composition. Digital printing allows for a depth of tone and detail that honours the original design without sacrificing the delicacy of the base fabric. The result is a border that sits between the ornamental and the painterly. Stitch it along the hem of a georgette dupatta for a contemporary festive look, or use it to finish the edge of a sheer kurta in ivory or ivory-white, letting the blue and the figure carry all the weight of ornamentation.

the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has long been the subcontinent's most devoted custodian of woven splendour, and even as digital printing enters its ateliers, the city's signature sensibility remains intact. This net fabric carries a border conceived in the Banarasi tradition, where the ghoonghat-clad figure distils centuries of north Indian feminine iconography into a single motif. The applique work adds tactile depth, layering craft onto craft. Net as a ground fabric arrived in Banaras through colonial-era trade and was swiftly absorbed into local vocabulary, prized for its ability to hold ornament whilst breathing freely in the heat.

to wear it,

How to style

Stitch this fabric as the dupatta panel or border trim on a silk kurta for a festive mehendi or sangeet gathering, letting the applique lady face outward as a deliberate design statement. Alternatively, use it to edge a lehenga hem and pair the ensemble with polki jhumkas and kolhapuri heels in cognac leather. For a contemporary reading, mount the border as a sheer blouse yoke over a solid tissue skirt, and finish with oxidised silver bangles stacked at the wrist. Each approach rewards restraint elsewhere in the outfit.

to last,

Fabric & care

Net is a delicate open-weave fibre and the applique detailing demands particular attentiveness. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, gently pressing rather than wringing the fabric. Rinse once and roll the piece inside a clean cotton towel to absorb excess moisture before laying flat to dry away from direct sunlight, which weakens net fibres over time. Store folded in unbleached muslin or acid-free tissue, never on a bare wooden shelf. Avoid perfume contact, as alcohol-based sprays degrade both the net ground and the applique adhesion gradually.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
