Behind this piece
Patchwork as a craft language belongs to the Adivasi women of Madhya Pradesh, where cloth has always been a form of record-keeping. Scraps of fabric, once saved from ceremony and everyday wear, were stitched into compositions that carried colour with intention. The latkan pallu, weighted with tasselled motion, is a regional flourish that distinguishes this tradition from mainstream weave conventions. Art silk here serves as an accessible canvas for that visual vocabulary. The candy apple red is not incidental; red holds ritual significance across many Adivasi communities of central India, marking celebration, passage, and presence.
How to style
For a festive afternoon, pair with a broad-necked sleeveless blouse in ivory or deep burgundy art silk, accessorised with oxidised silver chokers and kolhapuri flats. At an evening gathering, a structured full-sleeved black blouse grounds the saree's exuberance, while jhumkas in brass or terracotta beads echo the patchwork palette. For a creative professional setting, drape with a fitted roll-neck blouse in charcoal, and carry a dhokra-finished clutch. The latkan pallu is best showcased in the Nivi drape, letting the tassels fall freely at the left shoulder.
Fabric & care
Art silk responds well to gentle hand-washing in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid wringing; press excess water out by rolling the saree carefully within a clean cotton towel. Dry flat in shade, keeping the latkan tassels straightened to preserve their form. Do not tumble dry or hang under direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure fades the red tones. Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and fabric. Fold along the original pleats and store in a breathable muslin bag, away from moisture and direct light.
