the story,

Behind this piece

Chhattisgarh's silk-weaving tradition draws from a lineage that predates the state's formation, rooted in the forested heartland where tribal and folk motifs have long found their way onto the loom. The animal figures woven into this saree belong to that visual vocabulary: deer, elephants, and peacocks rendered in hand-interlaced zari against a cadmium-yellow ground that recalls turmeric and marigold. The supplementary-weft technique used here demands patient, exacting work, with each motif built row by row. The zari border anchors the field, lending the weave a ceremonial gravity that is distinctly central-Indian in character.

to wear it,

How to style

For a festive afternoon, pair this saree with a raw-silk blouse in ivory or burnt orange, gold Dokra earrings from Bastar, and block-heeled kolhapuris. For a wedding reception, choose a deep burgundy tissue blouse with a round back-neck, stack gold glass bangles, and carry a silk clutch. For a Diwali gathering, a sleeveless brocade blouse in deep teal creates a considered contrast; finish with oxidised silver jhumkas and flat mojris in bronze leather. The cadmium yellow reads luminously under warm indoor light, making all three occasions ideal settings.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk demands dry-cleaning for best results, particularly where zari borders are involved, as metallic threads can oxidise or distort under water. If hand-washing is necessary, use cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent and never wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat on a clean cotton towel to dry away from direct sunlight, which bleaches both silk and zari over time. Store loosely folded in a soft muslin cloth, never in plastic. Re-fold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks along the silk fibres.
