Behind this piece
Banaras has woven its mythology into silk for centuries, and this saree carries that tradition with quiet authority. The zari border tells an ancient story: trees in full canopy, animals in procession, motifs drawn from the visual vocabulary of Mughal manuscripts and Hindu temple friezes. Woven on pit looms in the narrow lanes of Varanasi, Banarasi brocade employs real or metallic zari threads interlocked with the silk warp to create a fabric that holds both weight and luminosity. The technique, passed through generations of Muslim and Hindu weaver families, belongs to a living, breathing craft lineage.
How to style
In Bright Rose, this saree suits a daytime wedding reception paired with a tissue or raw silk blouse in ivory. For Pirate Black, choose Varanasi evenings or formal dinners; a deep-necked brocade blouse in the same fabric intensifies the drama. Rococco Red calls for an unlined chikankari blouse to balance opulence with delicacy. Across all colourways, Kundan or polki sets in uncut gold complement the zari without competing with it. Kolhapuri heels in tan or antique gold complete the silhouette, grounding the grandeur.
Fabric & care
Silk brocade must never meet a washing machine. Hand wash is inadvisable; dry cleaning by a specialist familiar with zari work is the correct course. Between wearings, air the saree for two to three hours away from direct sunlight, which fades natural dyes and weakens silk fibres over time. Store folded in pure cotton muslin, never plastic, which traps moisture and tarnishes zari. Refold along different lines every six months to prevent permanent crease damage. A silica gel sachet in the storage box will guard against humidity and silverfish.
