the story,

Behind this piece

Bomkai weaving originates in the village of Bomkai in Ganjam district, Odisha, and belongs to a tradition that predates colonial record-keeping. Practised by the Bhulia weaver community, it is distinguished by its supplementary weft work, where geometric bootis are built thread by thread into the body of the cloth rather than printed or embroidered atop it. The box pallu here is a signature feature, its structured repeat motifs echoing temple architecture from the Odishan coast. This brilliant blue ground, rare in traditional Bomkai production, speaks to a weaver's quiet confidence in reinvention.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree draped in the classic Odia style, allowing the box pallu to fall in full view at the shoulder. For a cultural evening or art preview, pair it with a raw silk blouse in ivory and oxidised silver jewellery from Odisha's dhokra tradition. To take it into a formal corporate setting, a structured brocade blouse in deep gold works beautifully. For festive occasions, layer a long antique gold necklace against the blue ground and choose block-heeled kolhapuris in tan leather to balance the saree's textile weight without competing with its geometry.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk demands hand washing in cold water with a pH-neutral, silk-specific detergent, never wrung or twisted. Rinse gently and roll in a clean cotton towel to remove excess water before drying flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which degrades natural silk dye over time. Do not use a dryer. Iron on a low silk setting, always on the reverse side, with a thin muslin cloth between iron and fabric. Store loosely folded in a breathable muslin bag with a neem leaf or cedar sachet to deter insects, and refold along different lines each season to prevent permanent crease lines.
