Description
There is a quietness to white that only Lucknow truly understands. In the old mohallas of Uttar Pradesh, Chikankari has been practised for centuries as an art of restraint, where the finest cotton yields to a needle and thread to produce shadow-work, phanda, and jaali that seem almost to breathe. This long kurti is worked in that same tradition, its bright-white surface carrying the delicate weight of floral motifs stitched with the characteristic lightness that distinguishes genuine Lukhnawi embroidery from all imitation. Pure cotton ensures the fabric remains cool and forgiving through long hours, draping softly without stiffness. The simplicity of the ivory ground is itself a considered choice, allowing each embroidered cluster to register as a quiet statement rather than an embellishment competing for attention. It is equally suited to a relaxed afternoon at home or to occasions where one wishes to arrive with understated elegance. Pair it with wide-leg palazzo trousers in ivory or pale grey to honour the garment's tonal calm. A single strand of freshwater pearls completes the look without interrupting it.
Behind this piece
Chikankari is Lucknow's most eloquent inheritance, a needlework tradition that flourished under Nawabi patronage in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and has never left the city's lanes since. Skilled karigars in mohallas such as Chowk and Aminabad still work this cotton by hand, pulling thread through fabric in over thirty distinct stitches: the raised murri, the gossamer jali, the looping phanda. Floral motifs remain the idiom most beloved by the craft, echoing garden imagery from Mughal textile culture. Each kurti carries that long conversation between cotton and thread, light and shadow.
How to style
Wear this kurti with wide-leg ivory palazzo pants and Kolhapuri flats for an unhurried afternoon at a heritage market or a literary festival. For a wedding daytime function, layer a sheer organza dupatta in soft gold over the shoulder and add carved bone bangles from Rajasthan. Come evening, tuck it into high-waisted straight-cut trousers in ecru linen, slip on block-heeled juttis, and let a single oxidised silver necklace do all the speaking. Bright white works effortlessly across seasons precisely because it carries its own quiet authority.
Fabric & care
Hand wash this pure cotton separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; agitation in a machine can distort the delicate chikankari stitches over time. Turn the kurti inside out before washing to protect the embroidery surface. Do not wring; press gently between two clean towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, as direct sunlight yellows white cotton. Iron on a low setting from the reverse side, placing a thin cloth between the iron and the embroidery. Store loosely folded, never compressed under weight, and air periodically to preserve freshness.
