about the piece,

Description

There is a particular quiet that belongs to white, and this kurta pajama set understands it completely. Worked entirely in self-coloured thread against bright white pure cotton, the chikankari embroidery here does not announce itself but rather unfolds, the way a conversation deepens with patience. Chikan is Lucknow's most intimate craft, a tradition carried forward through the fingers of karigars trained in shadow-work, phanda, and bakhiya stitches that catch light only at certain angles. Pure cotton, in this weight and weave, is precisely the right ground for such restraint: it breathes, drapes without stiffness, and grows softer with every wash. The result is a set made equally for the stillness of a morning at home and the understated formality of a daytime gathering, a festive lunch, or a quiet prayer occasion where fuss would feel out of place. Wear it as presented, with nothing competing for attention, and let the embroidery do its slow, considered work. A pair of Kolhapuri sandals and a simple watch are all the occasion needs.

the story,

Behind this piece

Chikankari is Lucknow's quietest inheritance, a craft believed to have flourished under Mughal patronage and later refined through generations of Muslim artisan families in the mohallas of old Awadh. What makes this kurta particular is its restraint: self-coloured white-on-white thread work, where the embroidery reveals itself only in shifting light. Stitches such as shadow work, bakhia, and phanda require a stillness of hand that no machine can replicate. On pure cotton, the needlework breathes with the fabric, making the garment as much an act of devotion as it is an article of dress.

to wear it,

How to style

For Eid or a summer wedding, wear this set with hand-crafted Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather and a single strand of freshwater pearls. On quieter days, pair the kurta alone over slim-cut ivory trousers for a considered, tonal look. Those in the diaspora might layer it beneath a linen blazer in ecru or stone for gallery openings or cultural evenings. A silver kada from Rajasthan or a carved bone bangle keeps the aesthetic grounded in craft rather than ceremony. White demands very little and gives back enormously.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton Chikankari requires a gentle hand. Wash separately in cold water, using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and always by hand to protect the embroidered stitches from snagging or distorting. Do not wring; instead, press the fabric between two clean towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which yellows white cotton over time. Iron on a low-to-medium setting on the reverse side to preserve stitch texture. Store folded in a breathable cotton muslin bag, never in plastic, to allow the fibre to remain fresh across seasons.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
