Brazilian-Sand Pure Silk Short Jacket from Kashmir with Floral Vine Aari Embroidery by Hand
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the Kashmir Valley. Distinct from the counted-stitch precision of sozni, aari work moves with an improvisational fluency, the needle chasing curvilinear vines and blooms across fabric in a single continuous chain. On this short jacket, the floral vine motif draws from the same garden vocabulary that once adorned Mughal shawls and durbar textiles. The base cloth is pure silk, its warm, sand-toned ground deepening the luminosity of every hand-worked petal and tendril.
How to style
Wear this jacket over a ivory or ecru silk kurta with slim palazzo trousers for a literary festival or gallery opening. Alternatively, layer it above a fine cotton saree in ivory or pale gold, letting the embroidery read as a statement piece rather than an accent. For a contemporary diaspora occasion, pair it with wide-leg ivory linen trousers and flat kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. Jewellery should be restrained: a single gold choker or uncut-polished silver studs complement the warmth of the Brazilian-sand ground without competing with the embroidered surface.
Fabric & care
Pure silk is a protein fibre that weakens with heat and alkaline detergents. Dry-clean this jacket for best results. If hand-washing, use cold water with a very small quantity of mild, pH-neutral soap, and handle without wringing or twisting. Roll gently in a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then dry flat and away from direct sunlight, which yellows silk over time. Store folded in acid-free tissue or a breathable muslin bag, never compressed beneath heavier garments. Light steaming on the reverse side, rather than direct ironing, will refresh the fabric and protect the embroidered threads.
