about the piece,

Description

A border that carries within it the quiet grandeur of the atelier, where needle and thread conspire to make silk bloom. Worked in art silk, this embroidered border brings together metallic thread and faux pearls in a floral motif that recalls the ornamental vocabulary of North Indian court textiles. The combination of Palace Blue and Tricolor colourways speaks to the studied restraint of ceremonial craft, where colour is chosen not for spectacle but for harmony. Metallic threadwork of this kind draws from a long tradition of zardozi and sitara embellishment, practised across Lucknow and Delhi's storied ateliers, where embellishment is understood as architecture rather than decoration. The faux pearls lend each floral repeat a soft, luminous weight, elevating the border from trim to centrepiece. Art silk carries the motifs with a supple drape, making the border equally at home on heavier weaves and delicate fabrics alike. Stitch this border along the hem of a silk kurta or apply it to the pallu of a plain georgette saree to introduce ceremony without effort. It works beautifully too along the neckline of a chikankari dupatta.

the story,

Behind this piece

Zardozi and its allied traditions of metallic embroidery trace their lineage to the Mughal ateliers of Lucknow, Agra, and Hyderabad, where artisans transformed gold-wrapped threads and seed pearls into expressions of courtly splendour. This border carries that inheritance forward in art silk, its flower motifs outlined in metallic thread and punctuated by faux pearls that catch light with quiet insistence. The Palace Blue ground deepens the luminosity of the metalwork, while the tricolour variant speaks to a more festive register. Each piece is a fragment of a larger, centuries-old conversation between needle, thread, and occasion.

to wear it,

How to style

Sew this border along the hem of a raw silk anarkali in ivory or deep teal for a wedding reception that needs no further ornamentation. On a plain georgette saree, apply it at the pallu edge and let the faux pearls do the talking; pair with uncut diamond drops and kolhapuri flats in antique gold. For a contemporary reading, use it to frame the neckline of a cotton kurta in off-white, styled with churidar and mojris in cognac leather. The Palace Blue colourway suits winter weddings; the tricolour reads beautifully under festive string lighting at Diwali gatherings.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk, woven from synthetic filament to approximate the sheen of natural silk, requires gentle handling to preserve both the base fabric and the metallic embroidery. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist. Rinse carefully, press out excess water with a soft towel, and dry flat in shade to prevent the thread from oxidising. Iron on the reverse side at a low setting, never directly on the metalwork or pearls. Store rolled in acid-free tissue rather than folded, to avoid creasing the embroidery and stressing the pearl fastenings over time.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
