the story,

Behind this piece

Varanasi has woven silk into ceremony for over a thousand years, and the Banarasi tradition carries that weight in every thread. This sari belongs to a lineage of zari craftsmanship perfected by the city's Muslim weaver families, the Ansari community among the most celebrated, who learned to coax gold into fabric with a patience that borders on devotion. The paisley, called ambi in the weaving sheds of Banaras, arrives here rendered in golden thread and sequins against a jewel-deep blue satin ground, each motif a small inheritance passed down through generations of karkhana workshops near the ghats.

to wear it,

How to style

For a winter wedding, pair this sari with a full-sleeved raw-silk blouse in ivory or deep champagne and let the zari speak. Accessorise with polki-set jadau earrings and a single gold kangan rather than stacking. For a festive puja, drape it in the traditional Banarasi style with a nivi pleat, wear it with kolhapuri heels in tan leather. For a formal dinner abroad, a sleeveless brocade blouse in the same blue grounds the look in contemporary confidence. Keep the neck clean; the embroidery does not need competition from a heavy necklace.

to last,

Fabric & care

Satin, even when woven with Banarasi-style zari embellishment, demands a careful hand. Dry-clean only; machine washing will loosen the sequin threads and distort the satin weave's characteristic lustre. Never wring or fold wet fabric. Between wearings, roll the sari around a clean muslin-covered tube rather than folding sharply, as fold lines on satin can become permanent. Store away from direct light to protect the depth of the blue. Tuck a small pouch of dried neem leaves nearby to discourage moths without the chemical residue that damages metallic thread over time.
