Behind this piece
Jharkhand's block-printing tradition draws from the forested heartland of eastern India, where artisans have long used carved wooden blocks to transfer pattern onto cloth with quiet precision. This fabric carries that same unhurried hand: geometric and organic motifs pressed into a cotton-viscose ground, the ink settling into the weave with characteristic softness. The black-and-beige and blue-and-beige colourways echo the earth tones favoured by regional craft communities, where restraint in palette allows the repeat itself to speak. Each metre holds the particular rhythm of a hand-inked block, lifted and placed, again and again.
How to style
Cut this fabric into a relaxed Anarkali kurta and wear it with hand-hammered brass jhumkas for a lunch that moves between the cultural and the casual. Alternatively, a straight-cut jacket layered over a fine cotton kurta suits an evening of art or theatre beautifully. For a contemporary reading, a wide-leg palazzo paired with a cropped blouse in the same print makes a strong warm-weather statement. Ground any of these silhouettes with tan or cognac kolhapuri sandals; the earthy beige in both colourways pulls warmth from leather tones with ease.
Fabric & care
Because this fabric combines cotton with viscose, each fibre requires a degree of consideration. Hand-wash in cold water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation minimal to protect the block-printed surface. Do not wring; press excess water out gently between two clean towels. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can cause the beige ground to yellow and the black or blue ink to fade unevenly. Once dry, iron on a medium setting with a pressing cloth placed over the printed side. Store rolled or loosely folded to preserve the crispness of the print over time.
