about the piece,

Description

There are colours that carry an entire season within them, and blackberry-wine is one such colour, deep and unhurried, like dusk settling over a Madhya Pradesh winter. This saree is woven in Chanderi, a small town on the Malwa plateau whose weavers have, for centuries, drawn silk and cotton into a fabric so fine it is sometimes called "woven air." The base is pure cotton silk, that precise marriage of warmth and luminosity that only Chanderi achieves, where the cloth holds its body without ever losing its drape. Across this violet-dark ground, zari-woven roses bloom in a repeat that speaks to the Mughal-influenced floral vocabulary still alive in Chanderi looms today. The golden border anchors the saree with a quiet authority, framing the body the way a gilded edge frames a miniature painting. Pair it with a raw silk blouse in antique gold or ivory to let the border breathe. This saree belongs equally to a winter wedding, a festival evening, or any occasion that deserves more than ordinary cloth.

the story,

Behind this piece

Chanderi has been weaving its particular kind of silence since the fifteenth century, when the town in Madhya Pradesh first became a gathering point for skilled karigar communities under the Malwa Sultanate. What distinguishes Chanderi from all other Indian textiles is the marriage of cotton and silk on a single loom, producing a fabric so weightless it seems to hold light rather than absorb it. This saree carries forward that tradition through zari-woven roses and a golden border, the metallic thread drawing its lineage from the court weaving sensibilities that Chanderi has never entirely abandoned.

to wear it,

How to style

For a winter wedding reception, pair this with an ivory raw-silk blouse, pearl-drop earrings from Hyderabad, and block-heeled mojris in bronze. For a literary festival or cultural evening, a simple round-neck blouse in deep plum silk allows the saree's colour to speak without competition. For festive office wear, drape it in the Bengali style with a slim fitted blouse, a single gold bangle, and pointed leather flats. The blackberry-wine shade absorbs both daylight and warm interior lighting with equal grace, making it genuinely versatile across the cooler months.

to last,

Fabric & care

Chanderi cotton silk requires a measured hand. Dry-clean for the first few washes to preserve the zari's integrity, as metallic thread can tarnish with repeated water exposure. If hand-washing becomes necessary, use cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat on a cotton towel to dry in shade, away from direct sun, which dulls the wine tone over time. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, tissue between each fold to protect the zari. Revisit folds every few months to prevent crease fatigue along the border.
