the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that Kashmiri craftsmen have wielded for centuries across the workshops of Srinagar, Anantnag, and Budgam. On this black woollen jacket, that same needle has traced an elaborate grammar of florals and paisleys in golden thread, a vocabulary inherited from Mughal court textiles and refined across generations of hereditary karigar families. The black ground is deliberate, a foil that allows every golden tendril to assert itself with quiet authority. This is embroidery as devotion, slow and considered, impossible to replicate by machine.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this jacket over a cream silk kurta with straight-cut ivory trousers for a winter wedding reception. The golden embroidery calls for polki or kundan earrings in uncut gold settings rather than anything too geometric or modern. For a more urban register, layer it over a black turtleneck with tailored cigarette trousers and heeled kolhapuris in tan leather. On a cooler festival evening, pair it with a deep burgundy sharara and juttis in antique gold khussa work, letting the jacket serve as the statement piece it was clearly made to be.

to last,

Fabric & care

Kashmiri woollen textiles require unhurried attention. Dry-clean this jacket to preserve both the fibre structure and the integrity of the Aari threadwork, as hand-washing risks distorting the embroidered ground. Should spot-cleaning become necessary, use cold water and a very small amount of mild wool-safe detergent, applied gently with a soft cloth. Never wring or tumble-dry. Lay flat on a clean cotton sheet to dry, away from direct sunlight, which can fade gold threads over time. Store folded in a muslin cloth with a cedar block to deter moths.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
