the story,

Behind this piece

Phulkari, which translates literally to "flower work," originates in the Punjab region and carries centuries of living tradition. Historically stitched by women for their daughters' trousseau, this embroidery dialect speaks in bold geometric florals worked across the surface in dense, jubilant thread. The craft belongs to a continuum that stretches from rural Punjabi households to the looms and frames of contemporary artisan clusters in Patiala and Amritsar. Here, that inheritance is reimagined on weightless georgette: the black ground deepens each coloured vine, letting the multicoloured floral embroidery read with the quiet intensity of illuminated manuscript work.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this dupatta across an ivory or chalk-white straight-cut kurta to let the embroidery command full attention at a festive lunch or curated art gathering. For evening, layer it over a deep wine or bottle-green anarkali and anchor the look with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuri heels. A third reading: fold it as a stole over a tailored black blazer paired with cigarette trousers for a contemporary diaspora aesthetic that needs no further ornamentation. The black ground travels easily between registers, formal and relaxed alike.

to last,

Fabric & care

Georgette is a fine, lightly creped weave that rewards gentle handling. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation minimal to protect both the fabric's drape and the embroidered threads. Never wring; instead, press the dupatta gently between a clean towel to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can fade the multicoloured silk-work over time. Store loosely rolled in soft muslin rather than folded sharply, as hard creases set permanently in georgette. Light steaming on reverse is preferable to direct ironing.
