Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the hooked needle, the aari, that artisans in the Kashmir Valley have wielded for centuries. Worked across silk, chiffon, and fine wool, it produces a continuous chain stitch of extraordinary fluidity, each flower built petal by careful petal without the needle ever piercing from above. The craft is concentrated in Srinagar and its surrounding townships, where families have passed the technique across generations. Here, that lineage surfaces in monochrome: black and white blooms rendered on weightless chiffon, the restraint of the palette allowing the stitch itself to speak.
How to style
For a summer wedding, layer this kaftan over slim ivory palazzo trousers and finish with Kundan jhumkas and flat Kolhapuri sandals. At a literary evening or gallery opening, wear it alone as a dress, belted loosely at the waist with a woven leather belt, and carry a brass-clasped clutch. For effortless daywear, pair it with tailored white cigarette pants, minimal silver ear studs from Rajasthan, and block-printed mules. The black and white palette absorbs colour from accessories readily, meaning the kaftan suits both quiet and jewel-toned companions with equal ease.
Fabric & care
Chiffon demands patience. Hand wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation gentle to protect both the ground fabric and the Aari chain stitches. Never wring or twist; press water out softly between clean towels. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which yellows white threads over time. Do not tumble dry. Iron on the lowest silk setting with a pressing cloth placed between iron and embroidery, always working from the reverse. Store folded in a muslin cloth inside a breathable bag, away from humidity, to preserve the delicate chiffon for years.
