about the piece,

Description

Black and red in conversation, held together by the patient needle and the glint of mirror. This border length is worked in dense thread embroidery, the red motifs built up stitch by stitch against a ground of deep black silk, then punctuated with small inset mirrors and stones that catch light the way old textiles always seem to know how to do. The tradition of mirror-set embroidery carries its strongest roots in the Kutch and Saurashtra regions of Gujarat, where artisan communities have long used shisha work to animate cloth with borrowed brilliance. The silk ground lends the finished border a supple drape and a quiet lustre, allowing the embroidered field to speak without competition. Priced per yard, this border invites considered, unhurried use, suited to a festive lehenga hem, a kurta neckline, or the edge of a gathered dupatta. Pair it along the cuffs of a raw silk blouse to anchor an heirloom sari, or apply it to the border of a deep-toned velvet skirt where the mirrored accents will repay every source of candlelight.

the story,

Behind this piece

The language of Indian embroidery is ancient, and this border speaks it fluently. Black silk carries a dense grammar of red thread-work, each stitch belonging to a tradition of hand-embroidered borders produced across artisan clusters in Gujarat and Rajasthan, where mirror-setting and stone-embellishment have dressed ceremonial textiles for generations. The mirrors, sewn close to reflect light, follow a technique called shisha-work, historically used to ward off misfortune and add ceremonial weight to fabric. The red and black palette itself carries the memory of festival dressing, bridal trousseau preparation, and devotional textiles across western India.

to wear it,

How to style

Use this border as the defining edge of a raw silk or chanderi blouse, letting it run along the hem and sleeve cuffs for a formal dinner or a winter wedding reception. Alternatively, apply it to the border of a dupatta in ivory or deep wine silk, pairing the finished piece with a plain Benarasi skirt and juttis in antique gold leather. For a contemporary silhouette, stitch it along the front placket of a black silk kurta, then complete the look with oxidised silver jewellery from Rajasthan and block-heeled kolhapuris in tan leather.

to last,

Fabric & care

Silk embroidered with mirrors and resin stones requires considered handling. Dry-clean this fabric; machine washing will loosen the thread anchoring each mirror and may cause stones to detach. If hand-washing is unavoidable, use cold water, a mild silk-specific cleanser, and zero agitation. Never wring. Roll in a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then dry flat away from direct sunlight, which yellows silk and fades thread pigment over time. Store folded in muslin or acid-free tissue, never in plastic. Iron only on reverse, using a pressing cloth, at the lowest silk setting.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
