Behind this piece
Pochampally, a small town in Telangana's Nalgonda district, is the heartland of India's most celebrated ikat tradition. Here, the double-ikat technique demands that both warp and weft threads be resist-dyed before a single shuttle is thrown, a precision so exacting that the craft earned UNESCO recognition on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2019. This dupatta's bold interplay of black and red is not accidental geometry; it is the visual language of generations of Padmasali and Devanga weaver families, working on pit looms to produce the characteristic blurred-yet-deliberate patterns that define authentic Pochampally ikat.
How to style
Drape this dupatta over a white cotton kurta with block-printed palazzo trousers for a relaxed daytime gathering, letting the red carry all the colour. For a festive occasion, pair it with a solid black anarkali and antique oxidised silver jhumkas to echo the weave's graphic drama. On cooler evenings, loop it loosely over a collarless linen shirt and straight-cut trousers, finishing with tan leather kolhapuris. The binary palette means it sits equally well against cream, ivory, mustard, and forest green, making it one of the most versatile handlooms in a considered wardrobe.
Fabric & care
Pure cotton ikat should be hand-washed in cold water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Do not soak for longer than five minutes, as prolonged immersion can bleed the resist-dyed colour from the weft threads. Rinse thoroughly and press out water without wringing. Dry flat in shade to preserve the weave's structure and prevent distortion along the selvedge. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side. Store folded loosely in a muslin cloth rather than a plastic bag, allowing the fibre to breathe and retaining its natural softness over many years of wear.
