the story,

Behind this piece

Kutch, the salt-swept peninsula of Gujarat, has long been the crucible of India's most exuberant embroidery traditions. This choli draws from the region's centuries-old mirror work heritage, known locally as shisha, where small convex mirrors are stitched alongside sequins to catch and scatter light. The craft is sustained by communities including the Rabari and Mutwa artisans, whose geometric vocabularies and bold indigo-adjacent blues have defined Kutchi textiles across generations. The backless silhouette is a contemporary interpretation, but the hand that placed every mirror belongs to a living tradition that predates colonial trade routes through Mandvi port.

to wear it,

How to style

Pair this choli with a voluminous ivory or antique-white lehenga in chanderi or tissue silk to let the blue and its mirror work command the eye without competition. For a contemporary wedding guest look, wear it with wide-leg ivory palazzo trousers and a sheer organza dupatta in pale gold. Complete either look with oxidised silver jewellery from Rajasthan, particularly large hoop earrings and a thick cuff bracelet. Kolhapuri heels in tan leather ground the ensemble beautifully. This choli suits mehendi ceremonies, sangeet evenings, and intimate destination weddings where the light moves.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk carries the lustre of pure silk at a lighter weight, but it requires equally considered care. Hand-wash gently in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the embroidered surface away from prolonged soaking, which can loosen mirror settings and sequin threads. Do not wring; press softly between dry towels to remove moisture. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades pigment in art silk. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, never a plastic bag, and keep away from humidity. Steam-iron only on the reverse side using a pressing cloth.
