about the piece,

Description

Sunlight caught in thread, the Phulkari speaks before words can. Across the plains of Punjab, women have long stitched the world they see into cloth, and this fabric carries that same unhurried devotion. Worked in the Phulkari tradition, whose name translates simply as flower work, the embroidery blooms outward from a ground of pure cotton in warm beige, lifted by bursts of orange silk thread that catch the eye without demanding it. Sequins are scattered with restraint, adding the faintest shimmer to a textile that already possesses considerable inner radiance. The fabric arrives ready for a tailor of your choosing, inviting a silhouette shaped entirely to your proportion and preference. As a salwar kameez, it would sit beautifully at a festive gathering, a family occasion, or any moment that calls for something considered rather than merely dressed. Pair it with a dupatta in plain ivory or deep rust to let the embroidery remain the conversation. Kolhapuri chappals in tan leather would complete the picture with the ease it deserves.

the story,

Behind this piece

Phulkari, which translates literally as "flower work," is among Punjab's oldest living textile traditions, practised across the region for centuries as both a domestic art and a ceremonial language. Young women once stitched phulkari shawls and odhanis by hand, building a trousseau over years, each motif carrying familial meaning. This fabric carries that inheritance forward: the characteristic darn stitch running on the reverse to bloom on the face, here rendered in warm orange thread on natural beige cotton, its geometry softened by the addition of fine sequins that catch light in the manner of festival firelight.

to wear it,

How to style

Stitch this fabric into a straight-cut kurta with wide-leg palazzos in ivory cotton for a Lohri gathering or a winter afternoon wedding. The orange and beige palette sits beautifully alongside raw-silk dupatta in deep mustard or brick red. For jewellery, consider Punjabi phulkari-motif gold jhumkas or simple kundan studs; keep the neck bare and let the embroidery speak. Pair with block-heeled kolhapuris in tan leather for daytime ease, or ivory mojris for evening. A structured cotton blazer in ivory extends this into a contemporary work-occasion look without diminishing the craft.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton breathes and softens with age, but phulkari thread-work and sequins require gentle handling. Hand-wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, turning the fabric inside out to protect the embroidery surface. Do not wring; press out water gently and dry flat in shade to prevent thread colour migration and sequin tarnish. Iron on the reverse at a medium-cotton setting, placing a thin muslin cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded in a clean cotton muslin bag, away from direct light, to preserve both the ground cloth and the thread's warmth over years.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
