the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has woven silk for over a thousand years, and the lotus motif carries within it the memory of Mughal garden manuscripts and temple iconography alike. This beetroot-pink silk emerges from the Kasim family's loom in Varanasi, where the craft of kinkhwab and zari brocade has passed through generations. The hand-thrown shuttle follows a naksha pattern, lifting individual warp threads to build the lotus petal by petal. The golden border is not printed or embroidered; it is constructed directly in the weave, inseparable from the cloth itself.

to wear it,

How to style

For a wedding reception, pair this saree with a raw silk or tissue blouse in deep ivory, antique Jadau or temple-gold jewellery, and block-heeled kolhapuris. For a festive puja or family gathering, a simple backless blouse in the same beetroot tone keeps the focus on the border. For a formal cultural event or art opening, style it with a structured brocade blouse in champagne gold, a single strand of uncut diamonds or polki, and pointed-toe heels in nude or bronze. The saree carries its own authority; let accessories echo rather than compete.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk of this weight demands dry cleaning after each wearing. If you must hand-wash, use cold water and a pH-neutral silk-specific cleanser; never wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat on a clean cotton towel and roll gently to absorb moisture, then dry away from direct sunlight, which fades both the beetroot ground and the zari. Store folded in fine muslin, not plastic, and refold along different lines each season to prevent permanent creasing. Tuck a small neem or lavender sachet nearby to discourage silverfish. A well-stored Banarasi silk rewards its keeper for decades.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
