the story,

Behind this piece

Khandua Pata is among Odisha's most venerated weaving traditions, practised predominantly in the Nuapatna region of Cuttack district. The fabric holds sacred standing: lengths of Khandua silk are offered to Lord Jagannath at the Puri temple, making this textile inseparable from devotional life. Woven on pit looms using fine mulberry silk, its characteristic temple borders carry motifs drawn from centuries of ritual iconography. This dhoti with angavastram arrives in a warm beach-sand tone, quiet and luminous, allowing the woven border to speak with the authority of a tradition that has dressed both deity and devotee.

to wear it,

How to style

For a temple visit or brahmotsavam, pair with a raw silk kurta in unbleached ivory and kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. The beach-sand ground reads as a sophisticated neutral, making it equally suited to a wedding reception alongside a hand-embroidered Kutchi silk bandhgala. For a curated festive-casual look, drape the angavastram loosely over a simple white cotton kurta, and finish with oxidised silver jewellery from Odisha's dhokra craft tradition. The temple border anchors each styling choice with ceremonial weight, ensuring the ensemble reads as considered rather than costumed.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure mulberry silk demands a gentle hand. Wash separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, avoiding any wringing or twisting of the fabric. Rinse thoroughly and press out water by rolling the silk inside a clean cotton towel. Dry flat in shade, never under direct sunlight, which weakens silk fibre and fades natural lustre over time. Iron on a low silk setting with a thin pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store loosely folded in breathable muslin, away from moisture and synthetic contact. Treated with this care, Khandua silk deepens beautifully with each wearing.

Frequently asked

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
