the story,

Behind this piece

Varanasi has woven silk for over a thousand years, and the tradition of zari brocade reaches back to Mughal patronage, when Persian floral motifs first entered the loom's vocabulary. The butta, that singular scattered motif, became a signature of Banarasi restraint: ornament placed with intention, never excess. Here, the floral butta and paisley border follow that discipline precisely. Woven by the karigar communities of the holy city, each repeat is a negotiation between warp and weft, silk and metal thread, heritage and the quiet confidence of a colour that holds light like sea glass at low tide.

to wear it,

How to style

For a destination wedding or a sunlit daytime reception, pair this saree with a raw-silk blouse in ivory or warm champagne, keeping the silhouette uncluttered. Jewellery should be restrained: a single strand of freshwater pearls and small gold jhumkas will honour the zari without competing. For a more contemporary draping, try a structured pre-stitched petticoat and a woven belt worn at the waist. Evening wear calls for a deep-backed blouse in the same silk, heeled Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather, and a single cocktail ring as the only concession to occasion.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk demands respect rather than effort. Dry-clean this saree after each occasion, and ensure the dry-cleaner understands zari brocade, as aggressive solvents can dull the metal thread. If hand-washing is necessary, use cold water and a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric. Roll the saree around a muslin-wrapped tube rather than folding along fixed creases, which weaken silk fibres over time. Store in a breathable cotton muslin bag, away from direct light. Air briefly every few months to prevent moisture retention and preserve the lustre for generations.
