about the piece,

Description

Worn close to the face, a mask can still carry the memory of a craftsperson's hand. This two-ply mask draws on the ancient resist-dyeing tradition of batik, a process in which hot wax is applied to cloth in careful patterns before the fabric meets the dye bath, preserving negative space as deliberate ornament. The result is a surface of warm, shifting colour, offered here in the sun-baked tones of Amberglow and Molten Lava, both evoking the palette of a late Indian afternoon. Pure cotton forms both the printed outer layer and the soft inner backing, ensuring the fabric breathes easily against the skin through long hours of wear. At 7 inches by 3.5 inches, the fit is tailored to adult proportions without feeling restrictive, and the cotton construction allows for gentle hand-washing after each use. Wear it alongside a plain cotton kurta to let the batik patterning speak without competition, or pair it with a printed dupatta in a complementary earth tone for a considered, coordinated sensibility.

the story,

Behind this piece

Batik is among the oldest resist-dyeing traditions in the world, carried into Indian textile culture through centuries of coastal trade and court patronage. In India, the craft found particular expression in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, where artisans adapted the wax-resist technique to their own visual vocabularies. Each layer of pattern is applied by hand using a tjanting tool or carved copper block, allowing the dye to bleed in controlled, deliberate ways. The two-ply pure cotton construction here honours that process: breathable, close-woven, and worthy of the motifs printed upon it.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear the Amberglow mask with a sun-dried yellow Chanderi kurta and block-printed dupatta for a Saturday market morning. The Molten Lava colourway sits beautifully against ivory mul cotton or a deep rust linen co-ord for an afternoon art-gallery visit. For festive occasions, pair either shade with a tissue silk or Maheshwari weave, and let the batik patterning echo the geometry of your Kundan or oxidised silver earrings. Kolhapuri flats or juttis ground both looks without competing with the richness of the print.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash in cool water with a mild, colour-safe detergent, keeping the Amberglow and Molten Lava tones vibrant by avoiding prolonged soaking. Do not wring; press gently between a clean cotton towel to remove excess moisture. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can lift the pigment over time. Iron on a low cotton setting while slightly damp. Store folded in a breathable muslin pouch rather than a sealed plastic bag, so the cotton fibres retain their natural softness through repeated wearing.
