the story,

Behind this piece

Varanasi has woven silk for over a thousand years, its looms concentrated in neighbourhoods such as Madanpura and Peeli Kothi where the craft passes from father to son in an unbroken thread. This dupatta belongs to that lineage. Brocaded on a silk warp using the meenakari technique's quieter cousin, each floral butta is raised by supplementary weft threads, giving the motif its characteristic lift and shadow. The latkan palla, with its weighted fringe, is a Banarasi signature: a finishing flourish that speaks of a time when embellishment was considered a form of devotion rather than decoration.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape the Royal Blue or Black Onyx over an ivory chanderi kurta set for a winter evening gathering, securing it with a vintage Bidriware brooch. For a daytime wedding, pair the Radiant Yellow with a deep burgundy Kanjeevaram sari, letting the dupatta serve as an antidote to too much formality. The Madder Brown reads beautifully against an ivory or cream anarkali; complete the look with oxidised silver jhumkas and block-printed mojris. The weighted latkan palla anchors the drape, so minimal pinning is needed regardless of which occasion you dress it towards.

to last,

Fabric & care

Banarasi silk brocade demands gentleness as its only condition. Hand wash in cool water using a pH-neutral, silk-safe detergent, keeping agitation to a minimum to protect the raised butta weave. Never wring; instead, press the fabric gently between two dry towels to remove moisture. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades the dyed silk over time. Store folded within a soft muslin cloth, never in plastic, and place a neem leaf or cedar block nearby to deter moths. Re-fold periodically to prevent permanent crease lines along the same axis.
