Behind this piece
The buti, that small flowering motif scattered across the field of a Banarasi weave, carries centuries of Mughal garden poetry in its form. Woven on the looms of Varanasi, this art silk saree revives a grammar of ornamentation that once adorned the courts of northern India. The all-over buti arrangement, known as phulwar, transforms the drape into a living tapestry. Gothic Olive, a colour suspended between forest canopy and ancient patina, gives this classical vocabulary an unexpectedly contemporary mood, suited to a wearer who moves between worlds with ease.
How to style
For a festive afternoon, pair this saree with a raw silk blouse in deep ivory and gold Kolhapuri heels. At a formal evening gathering, a velvet blouse in burgundy and oxidised silver jhumkas from Rajasthan will let the olive field glow. For a contemporary interpretation, drape it with a structured sleeveless blouse in camel-toned crepe, and finish with minimalist brass bangles and pointed leather mules. The Gothic Olive lends itself equally to warm gold tones and muted earthy neutrals, making the saree unusually versatile across occasions and seasons.
Fabric & care
Art silk carries a luminous sheen but requires careful handling to preserve it. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse gently and roll the saree in a clean cotton towel to remove excess water before air-drying in shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which will fade the olive pigment over time. Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth placed between the iron and the fabric. Store folded in a muslin cloth, away from synthetic materials, to maintain its drape and surface integrity.
