about the piece,

Description

The peacock has always known how to carry gold. Woven in the looms of Varanasi, this pure silk border carries forward a tradition that the Banarasi weaving community has refined over centuries, threading each motif with the patience that only hand-guided technique can produce. The peacocks repeat in lustrous golden thread against a ground that catches light with every shift of the fabric, a quality that distinguishes genuine Banarasi silk work from all its imitations. Zari work of this character was once reserved for the borders of bridal lehengas and ceremonial saris, and the border retains that sense of occasion in every centimetre. The scale and weight of the motif make it equally suited to contemporary garments seeking a grounded, heritage-inflected detail. Stitch this border along the hem of a plain silk kurta to let the weave speak without competition, or use it to edge a dupatta where the golden peacocks can catch the light as the cloth moves. A single strip transforms even the simplest fabric into something that remembers where it came from.

the story,

Behind this piece

Varanasi has woven peacocks into silk for centuries, the motif arriving through Mughal patronage and taking permanent root in the looms of the Ansari weavers of Banaras. The peacock, symbol of Kartikeya and the monsoon's promise, is rendered here in zari, the golden thread wound around a silk or cotton core and passed through the warp with extraordinary precision. A border of this weight and intricacy can take days to complete on a handloom. What you receive is not merely fabric; it is a fragment of a living craft tradition that predates the Mughal courts and continues in the narrow lanes of Madanpura.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this border into the hem of an ivory or deep teal silk anarkali for a wedding reception, and let the peacocks animate every step. For a more restrained occasion, use it to edge a plain Chanderi dupatta, pairing the result with a handloom cotton kurta and oxidised silver earrings. A third approach: appliqué a length along the cuffs and neckline of a cream silk blouse to wear with a Kanjivaram saree, completing the look with kolhapuri heels in cognac leather. The golden thread reads beautifully under both natural light and warm indoor lighting.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk zari fabric demands dry cleaning as the preferred method, since water can cause the zari to tarnish and the silk fibres to lose their lustre. If hand washing is unavoidable, use cool water and a drop of mild silk-specific detergent, without wringing or rubbing. Dry flat in shade, never in direct sunlight. Store folded in soft muslin cloth rather than plastic, and place a small packet of silica gel nearby to manage humidity. Refold periodically along different lines to prevent permanent creasing. Handled with care, this silk will hold its sheen across decades.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
