the story,

Behind this piece

Kalamkari, one of India's oldest hand-painting and block-printing traditions, has flourished for centuries along the banks of the Godavari in Telangana. The word itself means "pen work," and the peepal leaf, sacred to both Hindu and Buddhist iconography, appears here in its most elemental form: inked, repeated, meditative. The zari border is woven separately and joined with the precision that distinguishes Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam craftspeople. Cotton-silk grounds absorb the natural-dye palette with particular depth, giving each dupatta its signature muted warmth. This piece carries that lineage quietly.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this dupatta over a cream chanderi kurta with narrow palazzos for a literary festival or heritage walk. The peepal print reads beautifully against solid ivory or sage, so resist the urge to match prints. For a wedding guest look, layer it over a cold-shoulder blouse and a pleated skirt in raw silk. The zari border catches light without demanding attention. Ground either look with kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. For jewellery, uncut silver or oxidised brass complements the earthy Kalamkari palette far better than polished gold.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash this cotton-silk dupatta separately in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, never a biological one. Colour bleeding is possible in the first two washes, particularly from natural-dye components, so wash alone. Do not wring; press gently between two clean towels. Dry in shade, laid flat or on a wooden hanger, away from direct sunlight which fades natural dyes irreversibly. Iron on a low-silk setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side. Store folded in muslin, never plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe across seasons.
