Behind this piece
Bastar, the forested heartland of Chhattisgarh, has long carried its own visual language. The tribal figures woven into this tussar silk saree belong to that tradition: rhythmic, geometric, drawn from the ceremonial dances of Gondi and Halba communities whose movements have marked harvests and festivals for generations. Tussar itself is a wild silk, reeled from cocoons found on arjun and sal trees, carrying an inherent earthiness that no cultivated silk possesses. The zari border grounds the weave in a quieter formality, holding the tribal motifs between a frame of restrained gold.
How to style
Wear this saree with a raw silk blouse in deep ochre or charcoal to honour the earthy undertone of the tussar. For an evening cultural programme or a curated art opening, drape it in a Nivi style and pair with dhokra jewellery from Bastar itself, keeping the regional conversation intact. Kolhapuri block-heeled sandals in tan leather complete the silhouette without competing with the weave. For a daytime literary event, a simple cotton blouse in ivory and minimal silver jewellery allow the dancing figures to speak without interruption.
Fabric & care
Dry-clean tussar silk as a first preference, since water can alter its characteristic raw texture and cause uneven shrinkage. If hand-washing is necessary, use cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent and never wring or twist the fabric. Lay flat on a clean towel to dry, away from direct sunlight, which weakens silk fibre and fades the zari over time. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, not a plastic bag, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks. A neem leaf placed nearby discourages insects.
