about the piece,

Description

Lucknow holds its breath in every stitch, and this aqua-blue georgette sari exhales it slowly across six yards of whispered flowers and paisleys. Chikankari, the centuries-old shadow-work embroidery of Awadh, is rendered here by the patient hands of Lucknow's karigars, whose needlework families have kept this tradition alive through the narrow lanes of Aminabad and Chowk. The all-over pattern draws on the classic bel and phool vocabulary of the craft, where florals and paisleys interlock in a grammar that feels simultaneously antique and wholly modern. Georgette is the ideal ground for such work, its soft drape allowing the white threadwork to float rather than sit, catching light with a gentle diffusion that heavier fabrics would not permit. The aqua-blue ground lends the sari a luminous, almost watercolour quality, making it suited to daytime ceremonies, literary gatherings, and festive lunches where one wishes to dress with considered restraint. Pair it with pearl drop earrings and unembellished ivory or gold jewellery to let the embroidery speak. A silk or tissue blouse in ivory would complete the ensemble without competing for attention.

the story,

Behind this piece

Chikankari is Lucknow's oldest conversation with cloth. Originating in the Mughal ateliers of Awadh, the craft passed from court embroiderers into the narrow galis of old Lucknow, where it has lived for over four centuries. On georgette, the needle finds particular grace: the fabric's soft drape allows the thread to breathe, and the floral-paisley vocabulary here follows the traditional "bagh" arrangement, where motifs scatter like a garden in full bloom. Each stitch, whether shadow work or phanda, is pulled by hand, making repetition impossible and every repeat quietly distinct.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this sari draped in the classic Lucknowi seedha pallu style, allowing the all-over embroidery to read as a continuous surface. For a cultural evening or a festive lunch, pair it with a sleeveless raw-silk blouse in ivory or pale gold. Finish with uncut-diamond jhumkas or delicate Hyderabadi pearl drops, and slide on block-heeled kolhapuris in nude leather. For a quieter occasion, a fitted cotton-voile blouse in white lets the aqua speak without interruption, and a simple gold bangle or two completes the ease of the look.

to last,

Fabric & care

Georgette is a delicate crepe-weave fibre that rewards patience. Hand wash this sari alone in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse gently until the water runs clear, then roll it inside a clean dry towel to remove excess moisture. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades aqua tones quickly. Iron on the reverse side at the lowest setting, with a pressing cloth between iron and embroidery. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, not plastic, to let the georgette breathe through seasons.
