Behind this piece
Rabari embroidery originates among the semi-nomadic Rabari herding communities of Kutch, Gujarat, where women have long stitched identity into cloth. Characterised by dense chain stitch, interlocking geometric motifs, and the glint of convex shisha mirrors, this craft was historically worn as a marker of community, season, and ceremony. Each mirror fragment reflects light outward, a practice rooted in the belief that brilliance wards off ill fortune. Translated here onto a cotton backpack, the vocabulary of the arid Rann finds new form, carrying centuries of visual language into contemporary, everyday use.
How to style
Wear this backpack against a plain ivory or indigo kurta to let the multicolour embroidery read clearly, without competition. For diaspora dressing abroad, pair it with wide-leg linen trousers and kolhapuri sandals at a summer arts festival. At a craft fair or heritage walk, carry it alongside a natural-dye dupatta in earthy ochre or brick red. Silver jewellery, particularly oxidised pieces with geometric detailing, complements the Rabari mirror work naturally. Avoid heavily printed outfits. The backpack is itself the statement; everything else should hold space for it.
Fabric & care
Cotton canvas carries embroidery and mirrors that require considered handling. Hand wash in cold water using a very mild, colour-safe detergent, keeping the embroidered panels away from prolonged soaking. Do not wring or twist; press gently between dry towels and reshape while damp. Dry flat in shade, never in direct sunlight, which fades the thread palette over time. Store stuffed lightly with tissue so the structure holds its form. Avoid hanging by the straps for extended periods. Treated with patience, the cotton will soften beautifully and the mirror work will retain its brilliance for years.
