the story,

Behind this piece

Sambalpur, nestled along the Mahanadi in western Odisha, has been a centre of resist-dyed weaving for centuries. Ikat here, known locally as *Bandha*, is woven by communities of Bhulia weavers who dye the yarn before a single thread meets the loom. The antique-green ground of this saree carries that patience: each thread individually tied, dyed, and aligned so the rudraksha motif on the border emerges with quiet precision. The rudraksha, sacred in Hindu and Shaiva tradition, recurs across Sambalpuri textiles as a symbol of devotion woven directly into daily dress.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree in a Nivi drape for a literary festival or an intimate puja gathering, where its muted green reads as considered rather than ceremonial. Pair it with a raw-silk blouse in ivory or deep ochre to let the border hold focus. For jewellery, choose oxidised silver from Odisha's own Dhokra or filigree tradition, keeping pieces close to the ear. Finish with block-printed juttis in terracotta or tan leather kolhapuris. The saree suits morning light especially well, and needs no embellishment beyond itself.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash this pure cotton saree in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Never soak for longer than five minutes, as prolonged soaking can bleed the resist-dyed colours. Wash separately for the first two washes. Do not wring; press gently between clean towels and dry flat in shade. Iron on a medium cotton setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side, to preserve the surface texture of the ikat weave. Fold along the original creases and store wrapped in a soft cotton muslin cloth, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
