Behind this piece
Varanasi has woven silk for over a thousand years, its looms fed by the city's ancient relationship with trade, devotion, and geometry. This sari carries the katan silk tradition forward in amber-yellow, a colour that recalls the turmeric rites of old temple towns. The all-over geometric brocade speaks to a design vocabulary rooted in Mughal-era jamdani influence, adapted over generations by Muslim weaver communities in the Madanpura and Lallapura quarters. Weaver Ansar Ali works within this lineage, drawing each motif through silk and zari on a handloom where tension, rhythm, and patience are the only tools.
How to style
For a festive afternoon, pair with a raw-silk ivory blouse with a deep back and antique gold Kanjivaram border trim. Jadau jewellery in uncut diamonds and rubies will echo the sari's warm amber register without competing. At a wedding reception, drape this in the Nivi style and layer a sheer organza dupatta in saffron over one shoulder. Complete the look with kolhapuri heels in tan leather. For a literary or cultural gathering, choose a structured brocade blouse in deep burgundy, tie a low bun, and wear a single strand of Hyderabadi pearls. Let the sari do the rest.
Fabric & care
Pure katan silk weakens under direct water pressure and synthetic detergents. Dry-clean this sari after every second wear; between wearings, air it briefly in shade and refold it differently each time to prevent permanent crease lines along the zari. Store wrapped in soft cotton muslin, never polythene, and place a single sachet of dried neem leaves nearby to discourage insects without the acidity of mothballs. Keep away from direct sunlight, which fades natural silk dye gradually. Handled with this attention, a Banarasi of this quality will retain its lustre and structural integrity for several decades.
