Almond-Oil Two Ply Fashion Mask from Jharkhand with Printed Warli Folk Motifs
Machine or hand-wash cold, inside out. Air-dry in shade. Iron on medium heat. Wash with similar colours the first time.
Behind this piece
Warli painting originates in the Palghar district of Maharashtra and the border regions of Gujarat, practised by the Warli tribal community for centuries. Traditionally rendered in rice paste on mud walls, these geometric figures of humans, animals, and harvest rituals captured the rhythms of daily life long before they found their way onto cloth. Here, those spare white motifs travel north to Jharkhand, printed onto a cotton-viscose ground softened with almond oil, creating a quiet conversation between two distinct regional traditions. The result is wearable folk art, unhurried and precise.
How to style
Wear this mask with a handloom cotton kurta in off-white or ochre and straight-leg palazzos for a daytime gallery visit or a craft fair. Its earthy Warli geometry complements terracotta jewellery from Rajasthan or oxidised silver from Bastar. For a diaspora occasion, layer it with a linen blazer over a block-print dress, keeping the palette muted so the folk motifs remain the focal point. Kolhapuri chappals or flat juttis complete the look without competing. The cotton-viscose blend drapes close to the face, which allows confident pairing with even a delicate silk dupatta.
Fabric & care
Hand wash this cotton-viscose blend in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Viscose is vulnerable to heat and agitation, so avoid wringing or twisting; press the fabric gently between clean towels instead. Dry flat in shade to preserve both the almond-oil finish and the printed Warli motifs, as direct sunlight may cause the fine line-work to fade over time. Do not tumble dry. If ironing is necessary, use a low setting with a pressing cloth on the printed side. Store folded in a breathable cotton pouch, away from moisture and direct light.
