the story,

Behind this piece

Korai grass weaving is one of Tamil Nadu's most quietly imperilled crafts, practised primarily in the Pattamadai region of Tirunelveli district. Woven from sedge grass harvested along the banks of the Tamirabarani river, the technique demands months of learning before a weaver can work with confidence. The grass is sun-dried, sometimes naturally dyed, then interlaced in tight, rhythmic patterns that have graced Tamil households for centuries. This 12-inch handbag carries that entire geography within it: a river, a season, a set of hands that chose not to forget.

to wear it,

How to style

Carry this bag against a cream Mangalagiri cotton kurta set for a Sunday morning at a craft bazaar, letting the natural straw tones speak without competition. For evening, pair it with a handloom silk saree in muted gold or rust, adding oxidised silver jhumkas to honour the craft's South Indian lineage. On a casual day, it works beautifully with wide-leg linen trousers and a block-printed shirt. Keep footwear minimal: Kolhapuris, leather flats, or hand-stitched juttis in earthy tones. This bag asks for restraint, and restraint rewards it generously.

to last,

Fabric & care

Korai grass is a natural plant fibre and responds poorly to prolonged moisture. Never submerge or machine-wash this bag. To clean, wipe gently with a barely damp cloth and allow it to air-dry fully in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can cause brittleness over time. Store upright or stuffed lightly with tissue to retain shape. Avoid overloading beyond the bag's natural capacity, as the woven structure can distort under persistent weight. Kept thoughtfully, a Pattamadai korai piece will last years without losing the crisp, close-woven integrity that defines this craft.

Frequently asked

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
