Behind this piece
Paithani weaving originates in Paithan, ancient Pratishthana on the banks of the Godavari in Maharashtra, once the capital of the Satavahana dynasty. This sari carries that lineage in every thread. The parrot green silk ground deepens in light, while the golden and violet border frames a vocabulary of motifs that Paithani weavers have refined across centuries: the mor, or peacock, rendered as big butta and kunda clusters, and the kairi, that teardrop of abundance. Woven on traditional pit looms, these zari motifs demand exceptional patience, each one interlocked individually into the warp and weft.
How to style
For a winter wedding, pair this sari with a raw silk full-sleeved blouse in deep violet, antique gold Kolhapuri nath, and oxidised silver bangles stacked at the wrist. On a festival morning, a short-sleeved champagne blouse and unadorned hair keep the sari central. For a formal cultural event, drape it in the Nauvari style, which grounds the peacock motifs beautifully, and wear it with gold Kolhapuri chappals. The parrot green reads especially well against ivory and sandalwood skin tones under natural daylight and warm indoor lighting alike.
Fabric & care
Pure silk Paithani demands careful, consistent handling. Dry clean only; immersion in water weakens the zari threads and may cause the silk to lose its characteristic sheen. Store the sari wrapped in a soft muslin cloth, never in plastic, and fold it differently each season to prevent permanent crease lines forming along the same edges. Keep mothballs away from direct contact with the fabric; use neem leaves or cedar instead. Air the sari gently in shade every few months. Handled with this regularity, a Paithani sari holds its lustre and structural integrity across several generations.
