Behind this piece
Kalamkari, one of India's oldest textile traditions, takes its name from the Persian words for pen and work. In the Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam schools of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, artisans draw or block-print narratives onto fabric using natural dyes and resist techniques refined over centuries. This dupatta follows the Machilipatnam tradition of block-printed florals, where dense botanical motifs bloom across a warm buff-yellow ground. The zari-woven border anchors the piece in a second craft entirely, where the loom meets the pen, and two distinct skills share a single length of silk.
How to style
Drape this dupatta across an ivory or pale-champagne Anarkali for a Dasara afternoon gathering, letting the printed florals do the talking. For a more edited look, pair it with a cream silk kurta and straight palazzo trousers, then add temple-gold jhumkas from Karnataka and block-heeled kolhapuris. At a festive mehendi, layer it over a mint or sage lehenga blouse; the buff-yellow will warm both cool tones beautifully. Keep the neck uncluttered so the zari border catches light at the hemline, framing the full length of the dupatta with quiet authority.
Fabric & care
Silk holds dye beautifully but is unforgiving of carelessness. Hand-wash this dupatta in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, or a small measure of gentle shampoo. Do not wring; press water out gently and roll in a clean cotton towel. Dry flat in shade, never in direct sunlight, which fades both the kalamkari pigments and the zari. Iron on the reverse side using a low, silk-appropriate setting. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, away from synthetic bags, to prevent moisture and tarnishing of the woven zari border.
